"Feeling Guilty About Taking "Me Time"? Here's Why You Shouldn't"

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

Feeling tired and burnt out? I know I have felt this before and still at times forget to consider my needs. I have always been a people pleaser and have always put others first. This is not a bad thing, but it always has a tendency to catch up.

It is very important to remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish. In fact, it's necessary for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When you prioritize self care, you are taking care of your own needs, which ultimately allows you to be more present and available for others. How true is that? How many of you have felt guilty doing something nice for yourself? Let me give you an example of something I used to do while shopping.

I would walk thru a clothing store, grab a few items that caught my eye, walk around and just before heading to check out I would question myself, " Should I buy this? Do I need it? Maybe next time!" I would put back the items or just buy one. It wasn't that I could not afford it, I just did not feel right buying myself something nice. Truth be told I am still working on this, LOL! Writing this blog is also a reminder for myself and the same goes with feeling guilty in taking time to sit down, relax, get a manicure, pedicure, take a trip, etc...

Feeling guilty about taking personal time can be a sign that you are putting the needs of others before your own (no...really?). This can lead to burnout and resentment, which can have negative consequences for your relationships and overall well-being.

It's important to recognize that you deserve to have your own needs met and that it's okay to prioritize self care. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better able to handle the demands of daily life and be more productive and happy overall. So don't feel guilty about taking personal time - it's an important part of a healthy and balanced life.

Here are just a few tips to overcoming Guilt about Taking "Me Time"

  1. Remember that self care is not selfish: Taking care of your own needs is necessary for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

  2. Set boundaries (this can be a hard one) : Make it clear to others that you need time for yourself and that you are not available at certain times.

  3. Prioritize self care: Consider self care activities as important as any other task or commitment.

  4. Find activities that you enjoy: Choose self care activities that you genuinely enjoy, so they feel more like a treat than a chore.

I need these reminders myself at times, especially with #2 (boundaries). You do learn and once you start setting them it just gets easier.

So with that being said, I encourage you to prioritize your "ME TIME"!
